Mixed Media Monotype Series
A monotype is a single impression (i.e. print) that is not repeatable. The monotype image is developed on a flat plate and transferred to another surface (usually paper) with a press or other means. Since the image is developed only on the surface of the plate – not carved, etched, or engraved into the plate – the image must be recreated each time as there is no reusable printing matrix. There are many different approaches to combining monotype and other printmaking or painting techniques. I use acrylic paint in watercolor-like consistency to add color to the basic value structure of my monotypes. The process and effect recalls oil-tinted photographs and the transparent glazing techniques found in my paintings.
